BOM Best Practices

The BOM is the single source of truth for your assembly. A poorly structured or incomplete BOM is the most common cause of quoting errors, procurement delays, and build failures.

Required Fields (Non-Negotiable)

  • Reference Designator(s) — e.g., C1, C2, C5; or C1-C3 for a range
  • Manufacturer Part Number (MPN) — exact, full, no truncation
  • Manufacturer Name — spelled out fully (not abbreviations)
  • Component Description — e.g., ‘100nF 0402 X7R 10V 10% Cap’
  • Quantity per assembly
  • Package / Footprint — e.g., 0402, SOT-23, QFN-24

Strongly Recommended Fields

  • Approved Alternate MPN(s) — 1–2 qualified alternates reduces supply risk
  • Internal Customer Part Number — links to your design database
  • Do Not Populate (DNP) flag — explicit field, not hidden in notes
  • RoHS Compliance status per line item
  • Unit of Measure (each, feet, etc.)
  • Notes — any special handling, approved vendor restrictions, programmed device info

CRITICAL: If a component must be purchased from a specific vendor only (e.g., authorized distributor only, no gray market), state that explicitly in the Notes field. Amtech will comply but cannot assume restrictions not stated in writing.
